How good is God?

July 27th, 2006 by Shannon

My boyfriend, Jerrod, has been looking for a new job for several months. He’s talented and experienced in his field of game programming and design, but for some reason he hasn’t had many offers lately. Then this company in Newport Beach called him and they did a phone interview and that went really well. It turns out that his interviewer knew one of his references. So they called him in for an in-person interview. I was at VBS that day working in the pre-K class, and at the time of the interview, I almost sat my four year olds down to pray with me. I was praying for him, and for his interviewer, and I know that my grandparents were praying for him too. He finally called me to say that he was done, and it went really well. They took him out to lunch and he got to meet pretty much the whole programming team, and he liked them alot. The next day I was at VBS again, this time in the Kindergarden room, and at around 11am he texted me to say he had gotten an offer, and they had even offered him a little more than he asked for, which is great. When VBS was over, I went down to the nursery where my grandmother was and told her about the news. I think she was even more excited than I was! I think she would’ve jumped up if she hadn’t been holding a baby.
“Do you know what this means?” She asked me.
“That he’s going to move to Orange County?” I suggested.
“How good is God?” my grandmother prompted.
Yeah, God is good. If I didn’t know that already, I would have learned from this. The past few weeks have certainly been a testament to it.

The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works.
Psalm 145:9

Not only that, but the lease on Jerrod’s apartment in Burbank isn’t up until March, so he would have had to pay to break his lease. By the grace of God, the company that owns his apartments also owns several others in the area he needs to move to, and he can just transfer his lease! I went with him a few days ago to look at the Huntington Beach apartments, and they’re really nice. There are lots of trees, the floorplan looked really cute, and there was one available on the bottom that had it’s window facing trees and stuff with a nice patio and really shady. An elderly lady lives there and is moving to assisted living, so it’s like, really clean and stuff. I just knew that was the one and I started jumping up and down telling him to get it right then. He put down a deposit, and ended up going back a few days later to sign the papers and make it official. He’ll be moving in the week of August 8th.

If that weren’t enough, the same week he did the phone interview with his new company, I started getting lots of jobs too. A website needed hosting, and I offered them a good deal and help with the setup. Then a friend needed some logos made and his company liked them so much, I ended up doing some more for him. Then my mom’s friend needed some computer lessons, so I went to her house and gave her a session, and now I’m going back again on Saturday.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28

Death to HP Printers

July 16th, 2006 by Shannon

Going along with my previous rant about hating paper and loving web 2.0 companies, I wish death to all HP printers. I’ve been at the parents’ house for the past several hours, and in that time I wasn’t always completely focused on my task of printing invitations on my dad’s color laser printer, but I have been working on it all night. The root of the problem is this; if HP and just released the 64 drivers for this printer, I would have installed them on the desktop months ago, making it easy to print these from my laptop over the network.

I *heart* Web 2.0

I do, I totally *heart* Web 2.0 sites, the concept behind them, community, open source, web-based content, no paper! hooray! So I’m attempting to learn to use Ajax in the hopes of being able to use it for my own projects. Yesterday I got to print my own check from a logo I made. That was pretty fun. It had all the thrill of printing my own money, yet it was legal. Normally, though, I try to avoid printing. My uncle is getting married next month, and although I’m perfectly happy to design things like invitations, the actual printing of said invitations is dubious. I can handle printing ordinary card sized invitations, I’m just glad I don’t have to mail them. Mailing is the true evil. I already intend on building my own website software to run my future wedding site including invitations and RSVP system and everything in the hopes that I will not have to use paper invitations with actual mailing involved. I hate mailing things. Plus it’ll be alot easier when my guest list is stored in a MySQL database. I used to think I’d have to mail to the few hold-outs without email… but I can’t think of any now. Hooray!Oh well, I love Web 2.0. It seems that every day there’s something else new and shiny to check out on the various tech and Web 2.0 blogs. Does anyone have a Vox invitation? I really fancy having one…

Pink Supergirl Linux Box: Part 6

Okay, the top coat is on and dry, and I’m ready to assemble!

Here I am, ready to start.

Me with the Motherboard.

I put in the CPU

I RAM! I’ve got two sticks of 256mb each.

Snapping in the RAM that I

I predict that this crazy sound card snagged out of my dad’s old PC will be the bane of my existance. It’s a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy.

Securing the Hard Drive.

Turning on the power.

Here I am with my new box!

I have successfully installed Kubuntu Linux onto my new box. I booted with System Rescue CD first to wipe the drive because it was my younger sister’s old drive and who knows what could be on there. Then I had no problem installing Kubuntu with the dvd I burned from the iso. It looks so pretty! I named the computer Comet, the name of Supergirl’s horse.

I set the new box up to use a KVM so it’s working fine sharing the keyboard and monitor with my Windows box, but I did have some trouble with the mouse, so I just have two different mice plugged in for now, and I’ll look into that later.

Here’s a screenshot for my Kubuntu desktop on my new machine. I was quite pleased with how configurable it is. I was easily able to create and use a pink fading pattern on the panel(at the bottom). I was pleasantly surprised when I pressed print screen and a little box popped up, allowing me to save the screenshot as a png!
